The Summer Music Program at Laney College is proud to have provided summer youth programs for the past 18 years. This year's program promises to be very exciting with the return of our four ensembles– Symphonic Band, String Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble and Concert Choir. Conductors Jay Lehmann, Rick Meyer, John Reager and John Gove invite you to be part of these exciting summer performing groups! Each two-week session will conclude with a free Noon Concert featuring the talented students of the program. Students attending the program in the past have been of middle and high school age with at least a year of performance experience.

Location - Get Directions

The Laney College Music Department offers an ideal creative summer experience! Located in the heart of the Arts Center of Oakland, only steps away from the Oakland Art Museum and the Calvin Simmons Theater and adjacent to the Lake Merrit BART station, students can commute from anywhere in the greater Bay Area. You do not have to leave town or stay over night or eat camp food to have a great musical summer. The Laney College Music Department and the Laney Theater are back to back and all large rehearsals will take place right on the stage that the performances will occur. This provides an excellent opportunity for students to experience the acoustics of a professional theater. Click here for a map.

Rehearsals

The two week sessions include large group and sectional rehearsals along with repertory and theory workshops. The conducting staff is joined by college and university students from the Bay Area's finest music schools. Students have the opportunity to work one on one with counselors on their specific instrument to gain valuable playing techniques. In addition, our counselors will perform special concerts as well as discuss various practice techniques with all students. The Music Department is well equipped with practice rooms and recording facilities to allow students to progress quickly toward their goal of becoming accomplished musicians. Here is a typical day's schedule:

9:00-10:15 Full Group Rehearsal
10:30-11:15 Sectional Rehearsals
11:15-12:15 Theory
12:15-1:00 Lunch
1:00-2:00 Repertoire/Sectional Rehearsal
2:00-3:00 Full Group rehearsal

Activities

Each year the ensembles participate in special activities. In past years we have toured Davies Symphony Hall, the Paramount and Calvin Simmons Theaters and the Performing Arts Library and Museum (PALM). On numerous ocassions we have had surprise visits from professional musicians who have dropped in for the day to provide seminars and performances. The noon concert is always one of the highlights of the two week summer experience. The public is invited to hear the fruits of the intense two week music rehearsals at a concert held on the Laney Campus in the Theater. Admission is free.

Meals

The Laney Campus Cafeteria will be open all summer for students to purchase lunch or students may opt to bring their own lunch. Students are well supervised, with roll taken at each activity and faculty are always available in the student cafeteria.

When You Arrive...

On the first day of each session students should arrive at 9:00am. Signs will be posted at the 9th and Fallon St. Entrance to Laney College and Counselors and Staff will greet students near the flag pole with directions to the nearby theater and music department. Plan to pick up students at the flagpole at 3:00pm, unless they are taking public transportation.
